If you’re looking for an unusual hiking experience near the sea, the Moon Plateau (Mjesečev plato) on the island of Krk offers exactly that – a landscape so unique and raw, it feels like walking on the surface of the Moon.
What is the Moon Plateau?
Located northeast of Baška, the Moon Plateau is a vast karst area shaped by wind, sun, and salt. It’s a rocky, almost vegetation-free plateau with bright white stones that give it its lunar appearance. It’s ideal for lovers of silence, wide-open views, and wild natural beauty.
Trail Description
Start: Baška (near the Church of St. Ivan or Hotel Forza)
Distance: approx. 6–7 km (depending on the route)
Duration: 2–3 hours one way
Difficulty: Moderate (solid footwear and basic fitness required)
Highlights: panoramic views of the Velebit mountains, Senj Channel, and nearby islands like Goli Otok and Prvić
The trail begins in shade – the first section leads through a pine forest and past dry stone walls. As you ascend, the landscape opens up and becomes bare, with no shade or vegetation at the top – the true Moon Plateau experience.

Tips for Hikers
The first part is shaded, but there is no shade at the top – bring plenty of water!
Wear a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses.
Best time to hike: early morning or late afternoon.
If hiking with a dog, bring water and paw protection – the rocks can be sharp and hot.
Why Go?
